I Hear A Note-Uncertainty

Listen to I Hear A Note-Uncertainty ^  Nancy Wellman, Jeffery Kaufman, vocals

RICKY:

Hey Helen, you're so fine,
You got me looking through love's new eyes.
Now, I've had women on my side,
But they don't measure to your sweet light.

Helen stands, sings out, away from Ricky and the others.
HELEN:

Cold steel blue, fiery red,
Sunburst sky goes to my head.
My days match the cold and wet
Season's change into brown.

I hear you call when I brush my colors bright.
Do you hear my cries in the night?
Kiss the bright dawn of another working day.
Don't let my colors fade away.
Coming down

Helen turns to Ricky.
'Cause I hear a note swelling up, ready to sing out.
About a memory ringing up loud!
I hear a chorus with voices I don't have.
Just two notes, one I gave away, the other I never had!

Helen sings out, away from Ricky and the others.
Who is this Ricky, and why do I feel
That my heart's about to unfold?
Like a pretty picture or a sweet harmony,
Will he make my picture whole?

He's a spring season; I shudder, I'm cold,
Revealing colors that are new.
It's his heart I'm teasing, but deep down I know
It's still the same bed I fall into.

Helen pulls back in closer to Ricky, they behold each other.

Gaylord comes on stage right, not noticed by the others.  He sings to Helen, who does not respond to his presence.
GAYLORD:

Since you were a child, you've been told that you shine,
Been told that you have a heart of gold.
Since you can remember, they say you're special.
But all those kind words always leave you cold.

Uncertainty has been your life long companion.
You've always accepted its prominence.
The dark cloud, you're not proud,
Wraps you up in a heart torn shroud.

Gaylord leaves stage right.  Helen gets up and moves away from Ricky, sings out.
HELEN:

Sugar and spice, is not so easy going down
When you wish you were never born.
Goody two shoes, trips on the yellow brick road,
Lands in the burs and the thorns.
Soft and tender, convincingly deceptive,
As I flirt and coo my way to a lie.

Look at this girl with eyes so wide.

Uncertainty has been my life long companion.
I've always accepted its prominence.
I do good, I always would,
Give of myself like I know I should.

Ricky comes beside Helen.
RICKY:

Hey Helen, why the tears?
We've all got blemish, got all them fears!
I'm quite certain your colors flow. So
Let me take you where my heart wind blows.

Helen sings to Ricky.
HELEN:

My canvass is strong and square,
No blemish, no patched up tear.
Try to mix my colors where
They harmonize on my palette.

Helen turns away from Ricky, sings out.
I hear you call when I brush my colors bright.
Do you hear my cries in the night?
Kiss the bright dawn of another working day.
Don't let my colors fade away.
Fade away
Fade away
Fade away
Fade away
